National Strawberry Pie Day

Today is National Strawberry Pie Day….another seasonally out of date day to celebrate.

Here in Central Virginia, we typically harvest our fresh from the garden strawberries in late May and into June. This year, with our warm winter, strawberries were long gone in June. And certainly not hanging around in September!!

I love food holidays! But I really do wish they were more seasonally in tune with what’s ripe and available. Frozen strawberries just don’t have the appeal of freshly picked, perfectly ripened in season strawberries for a pie.

Those of you who wish to celebrate may do so with strawberries trucked in from who knows where and pay crazy prices for them while you’re at it. I’ll wait until next May/June for strawberry pie, thank you very much!
